Professor Dr. Dr. Aurelia Colombi Ciacchi to deliver public lecture entitled: "Human Rights Obligations of Business Actors?”
Do human rights only entail obligations for public authorities, or do they also entail obligations for private actors? Are privately owned commercial enterprises, for example banks, obliged to respect human rights? If yes, to what extent?
These and other questions concerning the relationship between human rights and business actors will be addressed in the public lecture of Prof. Dr. Dr. Aurelia Colombi Ciacchi.
The Centre for Islamic Finance at the University of Bolton are delighted to invite you to a CIF lecture to be given by Professor Dr. Dr. Aurelia Colombi Ciacchi.
The event will take place in the William Morris Court Room at the University of Bolton at 5pm on Tuesday 21 November 2017.
Aurelia Colombi Ciacchi is Professor of Law and Governance and Academic Director of the Groningen Centre for Law and Governance at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), since 2010. Previously, she was a researcher and lecturer at the universities of Kiel and Bremen in Germany, and a Marie Curie Fellow at the Institute of European and Comparative Law at the University of Oxford in the UK.
The research project she initiated in Oxford together with Prof. Stephen Weatherill in 2004 (a research project funded by the European Commission from 2004 until 2007) was then developed and expanded so as to compare to what extent the law of 22 European countries protect non-professional guarantors from unfair banking guarantees. The results of this research project were published in the book Regulating Unfair Banking Practices in Europe: The Case of Personal Suretyships (Cambridge University Press 2010), edited by Colombi Ciacchi & Weatherill.
Since 2000, Aurelia Colombi Ciacchi performs research on the extent to which the relationships between private parties are directly or indirectly shaped by human rights and other fundamental rights. From another major research project she co-designed and coordinated, funded by the European Commission between 2002 and 2006, the two-volume set “Fundamental Rights and Private Law in the European Union” arose, published by Cambridge University Press in 2010 (editors: Bruggemeier, Colombi Ciacchi & Comande).
Complexively, Aurelia Colomni Ciacchi authored and edited about 100 publications in comparative law and European private law. Since 2014, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Comparative Law and Governance (EJCL), and the Chair of the ‘Contract’ group within the ‘Common Core of European Private Law’ project.
The Centre for Islamic Finance at the University of Bolton, which was launched in 2012 has PhD students from around the world and in January 2016 launched its MBA in Islamic Finance on both a full-time and part-time basis. It is supported in its work by an International Advisory Board, drawn from highly respected academics and businessmen and women.
The Centre works in collaboration with other financial and academic institutions to encourage high quality research and to promote the understanding of Islamic finance through lectures, conferences and short courses.
